Today I had lunch with my favorite cutie-patootie, A, and 17 of his closest friends. I volunteer in A's kindergarten class every other Wednesday morning and today was my day at school. The class goes to lunch immediately following my scheduled time, so I told A that I would stay today and have lunch with him. What an experience.
A is permitted to buy his lunch two days each week and today was a buy lunch day. There are three choices each day, and I told A that he could choose for both of us. So I lined up with the class, by lunch choice, and marched in to get my cheese pizza and peas. A and his classmates showed me where to get my tray, fork and napkin, and then how to move down the line. I followed them to the assigned table for the class and sat down to "enjoy" lunch in less than 25 minutes.
"Bedlam" is the only word that comes to close to describing the atmosphere in the cafeteria! It seemed as though every child in the room was talking at the same time and my child was one of the ones doing the most talking. The five children sitting around me competed to talk with me and I now know more about hair bows, fishing, coloring, jump rope and playing "bad guys" than I ever thought I would know. Or ever cared to know.
Despite the noise, I was impressed that most of the children stayed in their seats, ate a good part of their meals, and followed directions. The staff know how to keep the students on task with only minor aberrations. And once again, I am thankful that I do not spend more than a few hours every other week in an elementary school!
